The Endoscopy Evolution
The evolution of endoscopes has been driven by doctors who have always dreams of bringing better care to patients and by engineers who made efforts to make these dreams come true. It has also been supported by new technological developments and materials that are immediately incorporated into product design in order to accelerate the evolution by leaps and bounds. A new material called glassfiber, developed in the United States in the 1960s, attracted a great deal of attention in various industrial sectors. The developers of endoscopes were among the first ones to turn to glassfiber. Basil Hirshowitz and his associates, for instance, used glassfiber in their endoscopes to take advantage of the glassfiber's characteristic of transmitting light from one end to the other even when it is bent. Their endoscopes allowed direct observation of the interior of a stomach. 1964 when the first gastrocamera with a fiberscope - the much-anticipated camera with an "eye" -was invented. After all these years, doctors became capable of performing real-time observation of the stomach interior for the first time. The era of gastrocameras came to an end around 1975, when they were completely replaced by fiberscopes. Moreover, endoscopes found wider applications for examinations of other body parts including the esophagus, duodenum, large intestine, bronchus and gallbladder. In addition to clinical diagnoses applications, endoscopes are now used for treatment purposes, aided by progress made ...

What You Probably Don't Know About Gluten Sensitivity
www.integratedhealthdenver.com 303-781-5617 - What You Probably Don't Know About Gluten Sensitivity. Celiac Disease is often considered to be synonymous with gluten sensitivity. In fact, many doctors and health care providers believe this to be true as well. If an intestinal biopsy does not find evidence of damage to the small intestine, then the patient does not have Celiac Disease which often is translated into the belief that the individual does not have gluten sensitivity. Furthermore, if the individual is not experiencing any gastrointestinal symptoms, they will likely never be considered a candidate for Celiac Disease, and will never receive blood testing for gluten sensitivity. In some individuals, gluten sensitivity can manifest solely as a neurological disease, and in others can result in the development of an autoimmune disease. Neurological symptoms include fatigue and depression and can mimic the symptoms of many more serious neurological and autoimmune conditions. Only a third of those individuals with the neurological manifestations of gluten sensitivity will have any intestinal pathology. This leaves a large portion of the gluten sensitive population either undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. Research is showing that there could be a link between patients with gluten sensitivity and a diagnosis of depression, hypothyroidism, Parkinson's disease, or various autoimmune diseases. When these patients present with symptoms of these diseases and there are not intestinal ...

Return to the RNAi World: Rethinking Gene Expression and...
Google Tech Talks April 9, 2007 ABSTRACT While investigating the genetic workings of the microscopic worm, C. elegans, Mello and colleague Andrew Fire, PhD, of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, discovered RNAi, a natural but previously unrecognized process by which a certain form of RNA can be manipulated to silence—or interfere with—the expression of a selected gene. The discovery, published in the journal Nature in 1998, has had two extraordinary impacts on biological science. One is as a research tool: RNAi is now the state-of-the-art method by which scientists can knock out the expression of specific genes in cells, to thus define the biological functions of those genes. But just as...
